Invitational opens Fredonia State home campaign

The first home event of Fredonia State's 2019-20 athletic year was held Saturday as three SUNYAC schools, including the Blue Devils, completed in the annual home cross country meet.

The Blue Devils' top finisher was senior Aidan Pollard, who toured the men's 6,000-meter course in 20:48.20. He was followed by two freshmen running in their first collegiate race. Anthony Ruiz was eighth overall and Collin Barmore 10th in 20:55.27 and 20:57.27, respectively. Fredonia State was second in the team standings.

Rounding out Fredonia State's scoring top five were Noah Watkins and Matthew Erman, with Kyle Campbell and Ryan Dunning the displacement finishers.

On the women's side, Elena Davis was 12th overall in 17:29.66 for 4,000 meters. Also scoring were MaryClaire Haseley, Morgan Ashton, Elizabeth Ramsey, and Sarah Buckley.

Cortland won both the men's and women's races. Oswego State also had full teams in both races, while Onondaga Community College had a full men's team. Runners from Mercyhurst North East also competed.

The Fredonia State baseball team extended its win streak to four games with 10-4 and 5-4 wins over visiting Hilbert College on Monday. Christian Pagano connected for a two-run homerun in Game 1, his third in as many games. Alex Gannon added a two-run blast of his own in the opener.

Day 2 results at Cortland

The 4x100 relay team took third place, and turned in a AARTFC qualifying time on the second day of the Cortland Classic on Saturday. Jacob Winn -- a member of the relay team -- also turned in a third place in the finals of the 100m dash.

After qualifying for the finals on Friday, Cara Pellechia finished fourth in the 100m dash, and also turned in a fifth-place finish in the 200m for the top two finishes for the Fredonia State women's track and field team.
