Lots to learn about international education during week-long campus observance

A diverse array of activities, events and workshops that explore international education from several perspectives will be held during International Education Week, Monday through Friday, Nov. 15 to 19.

“Traveling Sustainably at Home and Abroad,” an interactive Zoom session offering smart travel decisions that can help to reduce one’s carbon footprint, will be held on Monday, 4 to 5 p.m. Use the online link to register. 

Culture Fest, a celebration of the diverse talents and cultures that comprise the campus and surrounding communities, will also be staged on Monday, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The evening includes arts, crafts, student performances and the ethnic “garbage plate” as the featured menu item.

How to broaden one’s perspectives through travel and create impactful change while at home and abroad will be discussed in “Travel as a Political Act: A Conversation with Rick Steves” on Tuesday, 5 to 6 p.m. The Zoom presentation by the travel writer, public television host and activist will frame international travel as being more than just sight seeing and trying new foods; it is an opportunity for students to be global citizens and make a positive difference in the world.

Mr. Steves’ presentation is being furnished through coordination with ROC Your Global Future, a professional group that helps students enrolled at Rochester-area universities articulate and process experiences abroad. Use the online link to register. 

A Bubble Tea sale to help fund international student scholarships will be hosted by the International Student Services Office in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room on Wednesday, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Several flavors of the tea drink popular in many East Asian counties will be served. A $5 donation is suggested.

The weekly coffee hour social, hosted by the International Student Services Office, will be held on Wednesday, from 4 to 5 p.m., in Williams Center Room S226B. Coffee, tea, non-caffeinated drinks, cookies and satisfying conversation await students, faculty, staff and alumni.

“Envisioning the Future: Goal-setting for Study Abroad,” a Zoom session focusing on planning and setting goals for study abroad experiences, including a discussion of common benefits of study abroad, will be held on Wednesday, 7 to 8 p.m. Use the online link to register.

The sixth Global Banquet, featuring a buffet style menu representative of Fredonia’s international student population, will be held on Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room (see separate article). Tickets for the dinner that supports international student scholarships are available at the Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center and are free to students.

“How Study Abroad Will Help You Get a Job,” a Zoom workshop that explains how to communicate the value of a study abroad experience to prospective employers, will be held on Friday, 10 a.m. It will offer techniques to highlight study abroad experiences in one’s personal branding, resume, cover letter and interviews and how to share specific examples. International Education Week events at Fredonia have been developed by the Office of International Education, Office of International Student Services and the Intercultural Center. The week Is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education to provide an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of global education and exchange around the world.
