Junior Cameron Sample (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) will head to the NCAA Championship Meet in Geneva, Ohio at The Spire Institute later this week.
The long jumper qualified on the strength of his leap of 7.36m (24' 1.75'') on April 14 at the Rochester Twilight Meet.
The long jump competition for the men will take place on Thursday, May 22, at 2:30 p.m. In total, 22 men will compete with the Top 8 earning All American status. Sample is currently tied with four others for eighth place nationally.
Sample was recently named the Fredonia State Male Athlete of the Year. During the Indoor season, he won the conference long jump title with a distance of 7.16m at the SUNYAC Meet. He repeated the title for the Outdoor season, with a jump covering 7.23m.
Head Coach Tom Wilson is looking forward to the trip and what it means for Sample.
"The hard part is done and this is his first appearance at NCAAs," said Wilson. "Coach Abdo and I are very proud of him. We want him to absorb and enjoy the experience. As long as he can do what he did to get there, he could become an All American. Once you earn that, you are an All American for life."
