Fredonia State senior jumper and sprinter Cam Sample has won a weekly SUNYAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field award, the conference spokesperson announced today.
Sample was named Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week (ending April 26) for winning the long jump at the Blue Devil Invitational -- Fredonia State's first home outdoor track and field meet of any kind since 2008 -- with a best-effort of 7.26 meters (23 feet, 10 inches), hitting that mark twice. He added jumps of 7.15 and 7.02 meters to complete a dominant series. No other athlete in the field reached 7.00. Sample is presently tied at No. 15 on the NCAA Division III performance list this spring.
In addition to his jumping, Sample was part of a school-record effort in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet of Jordan Lockett, Talon Rowland, Sample, and Aiden VanAmburg won the event relay on Saturday in 41.53 seconds. The previous record was 42.17 seconds set two seasons ago.
Sample also teamed with VanAmburg, Edward Jourden, and Rowland to win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:34.92.
