Department of English Associate Professor Susan Spangler has signed an advance contract with Parlor Press for a co-edited collection of essays, “English Studies Online: Programs, Practices, Possibilities.”

The collection of essays brings together contributions from established teacher-scholars who have made the transition from the brick-and-mortar classroom to web-based instructional experiences and offers critical commentary on the programs (majors, minors and certificates) that have been developed in English studies, as well as the creation of individual courses within online programs, or as an element of more traditional face-to-face programs.

Divided into three interrelated conversations — practices, programs and possibilities — the collection demonstrates some of the innovative pedagogical developments in English departments around the United States in order to highlight how both hybrid and fully-online programs in English studies can help teacher-scholars to more meaningfully and purposefully enact the values of a liberal arts education, Dr. Spangler explained.

In Spring 2020, colleges and universities around the country (and the world) found that they had to quickly pivot all of their courses into fully online environments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiple chapters address this moment of emergency remote teaching, demonstrating where English studies has benefited from careful and planned moves into networked teaching environments, and in doing so, they provide a set of road maps for faculty who are now scrambling to catch up with best practices for online teaching in the humanities.
