Students can seize a chance to showcase their writing talents and win a cash prize by submitting a poem about a work of art in the Marion Art Gallery’s current exhibition, "Is anything the matter? Drawings by Laylah Ali," in the Student Ekphrastic Poetry Contest.

Ekphrastic poems use vivid language to describe or respond to a work of visual art.

The competition is free and open to currently enrolled SUNY Fredonia students; each student may submit up to three poems. Five cash prizes total $550; other benefits include placement in a publication featuring the winners and a reading event in the gallery on April 11. The deadline to submit poetry is March 29.

Support for the activity is provided from the Cathy and Jesse Marion Endowment and Carnahan Jackson Fund for the Humanities, both established through the Fredonia College Foundation.
