Award-winning FRS students.
Students from Fredonia Radio Systems (FRS) recently attended the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference and award ceremony in New York City.
FRS, a student organization, was a finalist in 15 different categories, meaning they were in the top 5 percent of all those categories across the country.
Of the 16 awards, the staff returned home with four winner trophies. They include sophomore News Director Kevin Chicas and Nox Blair for Best Spot News, senior and Station Manager Matt Volz for Best Sports Update, junior Production Director AJ Govenettio for Best ID - Broadcast Station, and perhaps the award with the highest profile, WDVL, for Best Streaming Only Station (Under 10,000 Students). It is the first time since the creation of WDVL that it has been recognized with the award.
While at the conference, students had time to explore the city, attend conferences to better their understanding of the radio world, network with radio professionals and bond as a group.
Other station personnel attending the conference included senior and Chief Archivist Julia Klement, senior and PR Director Molly Sunick; junior and Music Director Justin Hoock, sophomore and DEI Chair Andrea Ramirez, junior and Business Manager Abby Jefferys, senior and General Manager Maisie Strader and senior and Local Lo Down Host Olivia Castiglione.
The students’ trip was funded by the Office of Student Creativity and Research (OSCAR). Associate Professor Mike Igoe serves as the FRS advisor.
