

SUNY Fredonia has been recognized among the top colleges in the nation and in New York in Niche.com’s 2025 rankings.
It placed in the top 25 percent nationally in multiple categories, including music, performing arts, education (teacher preparation) and professors.
Niche.com evaluates colleges and universities based on key factors such as academics, student life, value, housing, and diversity, drawing on data from the U.S. Department of Education as well as student and alumni reviews.

Among national rankings, SUNY Fredonia placed:
• Music (Schools) – Top 25% in the U.S. (#66 of 267)
• Performing Arts – Top 26% in the U.S. (#135 of 521)
• Education (teacher preparation) – Top 29% in the U.S. (#274 of 963)
• Professors – Top 29% in the U.S. (#458 of 1,595)
Other strong national rankings included Communications (Top 34%), Dorms (Top 33%), Sports Management (Top 38%) and Value Colleges (Top 40%).
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Judith Horowitz said the rankings demonstrate the university’s longstanding academic excellence, particularly in the arts and teacher education.
“Fredonia’s academic reputation continues to be recognized because of our dedicated faculty and our unique blend of programs in music, education, and the liberal arts and sciences,” Dr. Horowitz said. “Our faculty’s commitment to teaching and mentorship ensures that students are fully prepared to succeed in graduate study, careers, and civic life.”
Within New York State, SUNY Fredonia also ranked highly:
• Education – Top 20% (#12 of 59)
• Dorms – Top 18% (#17 of 97)
• Communications – Top 28% (#20 of 72)
• Professors – Top 29% (#34 of 118)
Dr. Tracy Stenger, who serves as vice president for Student Affairs, said the strong rankings for student experience reflect the university’s focus on creating a welcoming, supportive environment.
