Fredonia sophomore Kelly Sponholz will be competing at the 2007 swimming and diving championships for women in Division III at the University of Houston March 8 through 10. She officially qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in two events, it was announced last week.   Ms. Sponholz, an elementary education major, had her 1-meter and 3-meter springboard provisional diving scores certified by an independent panel of judges and will compete against 21 other divers at the University of Houston Campus Recreation Center.  After competing at the championships last year, she earned honorable mention All-American status.  She has set numerous records at Fredonia. Visit her page on the athletics website.

Senior music major and Fredonia Concerto winner Scott Horsington (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) has qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the University of Houston March 15 - 17. "Coach (John) Crawford and I are extremely proud of Scott and his selection to the NCAA meet," Fredonia State head coach Arthur Wang said. "We were pleasantly surprised to see his name on the selection list. I was trying to be optimistic about his chances, however, he did not win the conference this year. This could be an impressive end to Scott’s diving career with a chance of finishing as an All-American."  This marks the second time Horsington has had his diving scores certified by an independent panel of judges. He qualified for nationals as a freshman in 2004, but opted out of the meet due to a previous academic commitment. He did not participate in the sport the past two seasons.
