Carl H. Lam receives Lanford Presidential Prize
Carl H. Lam, a senior from Hamburg, N.Y., who is concluding a banner senior year at SUNY Fredonia, has been chosen to receive the Lanford Presidential Prize, an honor that recognizes a member of each graduating class who has exhibited balanced achievement and exemplified Fredonia’s ideals.
Criteria for the award, endowed by the late President Emeritus Oscar E. Lanford and Mrs. Esther Lanford, include significant intellectual growth and achievement, a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and exemplary service to SUNY Fredonia as well as a high degree of personal honesty and integrity.
Lam, son of May and Kenny Lam, has not one, but three majors -- Audio/Radio Production, Applied Music and Journalism. He will be given the 2014 Lanford award at the morning Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17, and graduate summa cum laude.
Just over one month ago, Lam was one of four SUNY Fredonia students who received the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. That honor recognizes students who integrate academic excellence with accomplishments in leadership, athletics, creative or performing arts and community service.Additional accolades that Lam has earned include membership in Golden Key International Honour Society and Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society, the Mark Cohen Student Association Award, Dr. Robert Hesse Violin Scholarship, Louis C. Adler Scholarship and L. Michael Dimitri Scholarship.
Lam has served a chair of three organizations, the Student Association Student Relations Committee, Music Student Representative Council and Alma Mater Society.
He has been an active member in a dozen campus organizations and committees. These include: President’s Student Cabinet, University Senate, Academic Affairs Committee, General Education Committee, General Education Revision Committee, School of Music Leadership Council, Associate Provost Search, Residence Life Director Search, Visual and Performing Arts Dean Search, Chi Tau Omega, Senior Challenge Committee and Society for Professional Journalists.
Also an accomplished musician, Lam plays violin in the Fredonia Chamber Orchestra, Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, Southern Tier Symphony and Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra and is a board member of the WNYCO.
Lam has completed internships at WGRZ-TV and WBEN 930 AM, both in Buffalo, and is currently an announcer/host at WNED-FM, also in Buffalo. Internships were also performed on campus in the Office of Admissions, Office of Liberal Arts and Academic Advising and Registrar’s Office. Lam wrote a series of articles devoted to SUNY Fredonia’s outstanding adjunct professors for The Leader, the student-produced newspaper, and has been a host/producer at Fredonia Radio Systems.
Following graduation, Lam plans to pursue a master's degree in College Student Personnel Administration at Canisius College, Buffalo.
