Collins, Mulcahy second at SUNYACs
Kyle Collins (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) each took second place on the second day of competition at SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Each runner finished just steps behind the respective first-place finishers. Mulcahy, finishing with a time of 3:53.70 in the 1,500-meter run, was 1.30 seconds shy of first place, while Collins was 1.40 seconds shy with a time of 14.58.87.
The performance now puts Mulcahy No. 29 in the country in the 1,500-meter run.
The men's track and field team finished sixth at the conference meet with 68 team points.
"The men fought extremely hard over the two day period," head coach Tom Wilson said. "We had some outstanding performances on the men's side and just like the women the men outscored their mathematical place. Unfortunately we finished sixth, but we are showing signs of moving up and it won't be long until this men's team really finds their niche and we'll be fighting for top-three in the conference."
Other highlights from day two of SUNYACs:
The 4x400-relay team of Jonmichael Knapp (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia), Nick Watson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta), Mulcahy, and Jeremy Kozlowski (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) took third place in the event with a time of 3:22.46.
Two men finished in the top eight of the decathlon as Doug Imperi (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) finished fourth with a score of 5,364 points, while Mitchel Paciga (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West) took sixth with 5,253 points.
Chris Shartrand (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Steve Whittemore (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Shroeder) took third and fourth respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Their times were 9:28.14 and 9:41.30.
Also scoring points in the 1,500-meter run behind Mulcahy was Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y./Gananda), taking seventh with a time of 4:00.30. Knapp, reaching the 400-meter finals on day two, finished in sixth place with a time of 50.28. Both Cooper and Knapp pleasant surprises for their coaches on Saturday.

Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) finished fourth behind Collins in the 5,000-meter run at 15:27.36, while Chase Towse (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 57.19.
In the field events, Rocky Caparro (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) took eighth in the high jump (1.83 meters), Hsin Chin (Pleasant View, N.Y./Arlington) was seventh in the discus throw (40.67 meters), and Damone Brown (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) was seventh in the shot put (14.27 meters).
