SUNY Fredonia has been selected by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to participate in one of three summer institutes designed to address the challenge of ensuring access to a high quality liberal arts education for all students.

Dr. Virginia Horvath, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Roger Byrne, Professor of Biology and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. David Kinkela, Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program; Dr. Jeanette McVicker, Professor of English; and Andrea Zevenbergen, Professor of Psychology and Chair of the General Education Committee, will attend the Institute on General Education and Assessment, scheduled June 4-8 at San Jose State University.

“Our team will be building on the work undertaken this year by the CCC (General Education) Committee to consider how we might strengthen and redesign the general education program that forms the foundation of all academic majors,” Horvath explained. “We hope to bring ideas back and engage the campus in developing a more coherent and energized general education program. The project is expected to take several years to allow full participation, development and implementation.”

Now in its 22nd year, AAC&U’s Institute on General Education and Assessment has provided a collaborative space for hundreds of colleges and universities to advance integrative general education reforms and assessment on their respective campuses.

More than 100 colleges and universities across the nation were invited to one of the three AAC&U summer institutes. SUNY Fredonia will be joined by 36 other schools, including The Ohio State University, California State University San Bernardino, Howard University, Marquette University, University of Kansas and SUNY Geneseo at the General Education and Assessment Institute.
