Devil highlights from Mid-Season Classic

Fredonia had several first-place finishers Saturday at the Brockport Mid-Season Classic men's and women's track and field meet.

On the women's side, Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn.) set a Brockport Special Events & Recreation Center record in winning the 800 meters. Her 2:12.05 was 2.66 seconds faster than the previous record. Two teammates, Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth) and Emily Maguire (Oakdale), were second and fourth, respectively, in the same race. Binggeli followed Morrison with a 2:27.75. Magure's time was 2:29.94.

Other winners were Brittany Feldman (Jamestown) in the 400 meters in 58.33 seconds, Julia Johnson (Baldwinsville) in the 5,000 meters in 19:29.62, Brianne Paganello (Batavia) in the shot put at 38' 11 1/2", and the 4 by 400 relay team of Sam Ruszczyk (Hamburg), Morrison, Binggeli, and Feldman in 4:07.50.

Ruszczyk was third in the 400 (1:03.65); Hannah Kurbs (Lockport) and Stephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y.) third and fourth, respectively, in the mile, with times of 5:23.29 and 5:24.99; Maddie Courtney (Getzville, N.Y.) second in the 3,000 meters (11:18.38); Kelly Vincent (Randolph, N.Y.) second and Alyssa Stroud (Allegany, N.Y.) fourth in the 5,000 meters with times of 19:56.34 and 20:30.40, respectively; Kimberly Grazen (Lancaster, N.Y.) fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (:10.29); Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y.) second collegian in the high jump (5' 0 1/2") and fourth in the triple jump (34' 0 3/4"); and Julia Schreier (Lockport) second and Kristen Sawyer (Lockport) fourth in the pole vault. Both women cleared 10' 11 3/4" inches with Schreier having fewer misses.

Men's winners were Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y.) in the mile (4:19.48), Kyle Collins (Suffern) in the 5,000 meters (14:58.29), and Rocky Caparro (Staten Island) in the triple jump (44' 0 1/2"). Collin Mulcahy (Batavia) was the first collegian in the 800 meters (1:53.63).

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
