The Fredonia women's tennis team won its sixth straight, and seventh match overall, dropping visiting Elmira, 7-2, on Sunday.

"It was a great win by all, but the match turned when our third doubles team won in a tiebreaker are giving us a 2 to 1 lead," said Head Coach Greg Catalano. "From then on it was just a matter of us getting three more wins."

No. 3 doubles Avril King (Naples, N.Y./Naples) and Mallory Mecca (Derby/Eden) scraped by with a 9-8 victory.

The team also honored its lone senior, Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy). She celebrated by winning No. 4 singles, winning 6-0 and 1-0 before her opponent retired.

No. 3 singles -- Sarah Bunk (Sayville/Sayville) -- and No. 6 singles -- Christy May (Buffalo/Sweet Home)   were both 6-0 and 6-0 winners.

Olivia Miller (Springwater/Wayland-Cohocton) extended her school career-win mark to 23, winning 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) won her 17th career match at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2 and 6-4.

At No. 5 singles, Mecca was the only individual not to record a win, but gave her opponent a run, falling 6-4 and 6-3.

Bunk and Adriana Speach (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) won No. 2 doubles, 8-2.

Elmira's other point came at No. 1 singles as Megan Fitzgerald and Katy Jewett dropped Chiacchia and Miller, 8-3.

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
