Devils serve Eagles a loss

The Fredonia women's tennis team continued its winning ways, dropping Brockport 9-0 and improving its record to 7-0. Sarah Bunk (Sayville/Sayville) and Mikayla Johnson (Lakewood/Southwestern) each won every set to pace the Devils.

Bunk won 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Johnson repeated the dominance at No. 4 singles.

Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) took No. 1 singles 6-0 and 6-2. Olivia Miller (Springwater/Wayland-Cohocton) was a 6-0 and 6-4 winner at No. 2.

To complete the sweep, Jane Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) won 6-4 and 6-2, while and Taylor Marelli (Riverhead/Riverhead) won 6-2 and 6-1.

In doubles, Anna Chiacchia and Miller won at No. 1 by an 8-1 count. Bunk and Johnson won 8-0, and Jane Chiacchia and Marelli were 8-2 winners.

It was also the first SUNYAC match of the season. Brockport dropped to 1-5.

Fredonia broke open a see-saw game with seven straight goals in the second half to emerge with a 24-18 women's lacrosse win Sunday over SUNY Polytechnic on the snow-banked University Stadium turf.

7-run sixth keys Devils

Nursing a 4-2 lead late in the game, the Fredonia bats exploded for seven runs in the sixth in in an 11-2 victory in Game 1 of a split with Staten Island. They dropped the nightcap, 3-2. Sophomore Nick Ciraolo picked up the win, striking out eight of the nine batters he faced in three perfect innings of work.
