Faculty win grants from Carnahan-Jackson Fund

Awards for the 2008-2009 cycle of the Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation have been announced. A total of $20,350 was awarded to faculty and staff in the departments of history, English, philosophy, theatre, visual arts and new media, and the School of Music and Reed Library.

Projects funded were:

Recovered Views: African American Portraits, 1912-1925

• Dr. Jennifer Hildebrand, Department of History
  A traveling exhibit of 40 photographs which document the life of African Americans in a small but vibrant Midwestern community.

Saakumu Dance Troupe

• Bernard Woma and Dr. Kay Stonefelt, School of Music
  Workshop and concert performance of traditional music and dance from Ghana, West Africa.

Young Philosophers Lecture Series

• Dr. Andrew Cullison, Department of Philosophy
  Inviting two young philosophers per semester (for three semesters) to give public lectures that will also be made available via podcast in video and audio format.

English Department Visiting Writers Series

• Dustin Parsons and Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Department of English
  To bring to campus nationally recognized authors of poetry, fiction and nonfiction to read and perform “craft talks” for the benefit of students and the community.

Leni’s Legacy: Art, Ethics and Propaganda – Spring 2008 Arts and Humanities Colloquium

• Dr. Thomas Loughlin, Department of Theatre and Dance, and Dr. Leesa Rittlemann, Department of Visual Arts and New Media
  Based on the work of Hitler’s filmmaker Leni Riefensthal, this series of public lectures, discussions, films and a play comprise an interdisciplinary term-long symposium that examines the ongoing cultural and ethical challenges posed by art created in the service of political propaganda.

Playground Drama Day Camp

• Edward “Ted” Sharon, Department of Theatre and Dance
  Campus-based drama camp for area children.

Art of the Guitar Festival

• Jennifer Darrell-Sterbak, School of Music, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, Guitar Society
  A five-day festival of public performances, a guitar master class for SUNY Fredonia students, a workshop for the community, and community outreach focused on the local Hispanic youth population.

The Emmett Till Traveling Exhibit

• Gloria Hobbs, Reed Library/The Emmett Till Traveling Exhibit Committee
  An exhibit featuring the 14 year-old boy who was murdered in Mississippi for whistling at a white woman; his murder was a catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement.
