Fredonia to host Double Reed Day
Fredonia will host its ninth annual Double Reed Day on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Mason Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The day is designed specifically for middle and high school oboists and bassoonists to spend time working in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere with Fredonia's double reed faculty and students, including bassoonist Laura Koepke and oboists Dr. Sarah Hamilton and Mark DuBois.
The day will include master classes focusing on solo performing and performance techniques, as well as a meet the composer session including a performance of a newly composed double reed octet by Margi Griebling-Haigh. Other activities include coached double reed chamber music reading sessions and a final double reed ensemble performance conducted by special guest Lisa Rice.
Also joining this year’s Double Reed Day will be highly acclaimed bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson, in conjunction with her performance alongside the Fredonia Wind Ensemble as featured soloist the preceding night.
Event participants will also have the opportunity to visit this year's exhibitor, Fox Products. The company will be onsite with double reed instruments, music and supplies available for sale. There will also be free minor instrument repairs provided by Brenda Small and Liz Widzinski of Small Musical Services.
Event application can be completed online with a registration fee of $30. Registration includes access to the activities as well as complimentary lunch and a Double Reed Day T-shirt. A $5 late fee will be applied to applications received after Friday, Oct. 10. Parents and teachers are welcome to join the event for free.
