New Horizons Band begins rehearsals for 10th anniversary concert
The New Horizons Band of Western New York, which provides a unique opportunity for veteran musicians as well as aspiring musicians who are at least 50 years of age to play a band instrument, is celebrating its 10th anniversary at Fredonia during the spring semester.
New members were welcomed at gathering on Feb. 3 in the lobby of Mason Hall. The band, which boasts over 60 members and is directed by Music Education Professor Katherine Levy, affirms that it’s never too late in life to learn to play a musical instrument. Band members learn to play an instrument, return to playing an instrument after a long absence or continue to improve playing an instrument that they have enjoyed for many years.
The average age of band members is 63, with ages ranging from the early 50s to the late 70s.
Group lessons for New Horizons members are led by advanced students in the Music Education program in the School of Music. Ensemble lessons are held on Wednesday and Friday, from 3 to 3:45 p.m., and are followed by full band practices from 4 to 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday and 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Lessons and practices are held in Mason Hall.
The band’s spring concert will be presented on Tuesday, April 26, 7:30 p.m., in King Concert Hall.
Dr. Levy was introduced to the New Horizons concept in 1995 when she became the brass instructor for one of the first New Horizon Bands while in Iowa City, Iowa. She’s also conducted a New Horizons Band in Georgia and founded another one in Hagerstown, Md.
“Making music is just too much fun to leave only to younger folks,” Levy quips. “Almost anyone can learn to play a musical instrument when good instruction, a friendly environment and lots of helping hands are available.”
