An introduction to the student-athlete experience in college awaits area students as part of National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Fredonia on Saturday, Feb. 3.

“We’re gearing the event toward middle and high school athletes and their families who are interested in learning about the college athletics recruitment process, what it’s like to be a student-athlete in college, and how to best prepare while in high school,” said Rebekah Conti, assistant director of Pre-College Outreach at Fredonia.

An information session – offering perspectives and insight from Fredonia’s coaching staff and current student-athletes – will be held at 11 a.m. in Room S204-ABC of the Williams Center. Informal presentations will be given by Director of Athletics Gerald Fisk, women’s volleyball coach Geoff Braun and several current student-athletes.

Tours of campus athletic facilities – the field house, natatorium and ice rink at Steele Hall and the gym, fitness center and support facilities in Dods Hall – will begin at noon.

Attendees will receive complimentary tickets to see the women’s and men’s basketball teams play New Paltz at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively, in Dods Hall. Bonus features include a celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, now in its 32nd year, as well as a scrimmage game by the Westfield Academy and Central School girls’ JV team, during halftime of the women’s game. The Blue Devils cheerleading squad will perform during halftime of the men’s game.

Raffle tickets are available to purchase on site to win sports memorabilia and other sports-related items. The first 100 guests will receive a free NGWSD t-shirt.

Prior registration is encouraged through a Google form, which has been placed at events@fredonia.

Though part of Fredonia’s National Girls & Women in Sports Day initiative, events are not limited to female student-athletes. All are welcome to attend.

Fredonia has promoted the event at school districts in Chautauqua, Erie and Cattaraugus counties.
