Rarest of rare 100-point games in opener

Fredonia's 100-point output in its 2016-17 women's basketball season-opening win Nov. 15 vs. Penn State Behrend was unprecedented.

It was the first time in 35 seasons dating back to 1982-83 the Blue Devils have reached triple digits in an opening game -- and only the second 100-point game in program history.

The previous high-game in a regular-season opener came when the Blue Devils defeated Marietta, 83-70, at the 2006 Penn State Behrend Tournament.

Tuesday's 100-83 final score also set the record for most points by both teams combined in a Fredonia season-opener. The 2006 Fredonia-Marietta game, with a combined 153 points, was the previous high.

In fact, season openers have been low scoring in general. Only six times -- including the 2006 and 2016 games -- has Fredonia scored 70 points or more.

Just as rare are 100-point games in general. The Blue Devils have been involved in just six 100-point games in 35 seasons, four times on the losing side.

Fredonia's 1993-94 team holds the school record for most points in a game -- a 102-85 home win over Utica-Rome in the final game of the regular season. St. John Fisher holds the record for most points allowed by a Fredonia team. The Cardinals rolled to a 109-59 home win in the fifth game of 1982-83 season -- hardly a sign of things to come.

Foes reached the century mark only three times since then. Keuka did it in a 1987-88 game, a 103-63 win on its home floor. Fredonia's 2003-04 team was victimized twice, first at Cortland, 100-46, and later at home vs. Oswego, 105-70. The Oswego game marks the only time an opponent scored 100 points or more on Fredonia's home court.

As for season openers, the Blue Devils improved their all-time record to 17-18 with their win on Tuesday. They are 9-5 at home, including four straight wins at Steele Hall.
