Rocky tops in triple jump at Spire

Fredonia junior Rocky Caparro (Staten Island/Susan E. Wagner) was the men's triple jump winner Saturday at The Spire Institute Team Challenge.

Caparro stretched the tape out to 13.71 meters -- 44.98 feet -- to top of field of 20 men and earn 10 team points. The Blue Devils had a total of 24 points overall and finished 10th in the strong 12-team field.

All the other Fredonia points came in field events. In the 35-pound weight throw, senior Kyle Brown (Hamburg/Hamburg) was third at 15.70 meters (51.50 feet) and senior Joseph Gabrielli (Depew/Depew) was eighth at 13.42 meters (44.03 feet). Gabrielli was also fourth in the shot put at 13.86 meters (45.47 feet) while sophomore Trent Howard (Dewittville/Chautauqua Lake) cleared 4.14 meters (13.58 feet) to finish seventh in the pole vault.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC Title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
