SUNY Fredonia lowered its flags to half-staff on Friday, Oct. 14 to express sorrow over the death of Ryan Patrick Purcell, a freshman on the track team, who was fatally injured near his home after a hit-and-run accident on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Mr. Purcell, a cooperative engineering major, began classes at SUNY Fredonia this fall after graduating from West Seneca West High School. He was a resident of Grissom Hall.
Ryan’s funeral was held on Friday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 3148 Abbott Road, in Orchard Park, N.Y.
Ryan's parents, Lisa and Peter Purcell, request that memorials be made in Ryan’s name to Friends of the Children of Haiti, PO Box 789, Peoria, IL 61652-0789.
Survivors include his cousin, Brian Sheenan, a member of the Fredonia State baseball team.
