Three SUNY Fredonia seniors -- Sara Maiorana, Noelle Panepento, and Kayla Patrick – received Sonnenfeld Awards from the Council for Women’s Concerns (CWC) at its annual ceremony held Nov. 12 at the Horizon Room in the Williams Center.
Maiorana, a Mathematics Adolescence Education major from Hamburg, is president of Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and class representative for the Student Association, and serves on the President’s Cabinet. She was also treasurer of the Teacher Education Club and Math Club.
Panepento, a Business Administration major with a minor in Music Business, is from Amherst. She is the president of the Music Industry Club and chair of the Student Advisory Council for the School of Business. Panepento is a personal manager of the Student Record Label band, So Far So Good, a member of the Resident Assistant Advisory Board and a Resident Assistant for Kasling Hall.
Patrick, a Women’s Studies major with a minor in Biology, is from Fulton. She serves as the president of the Women’s Student Union and has organized FSU’s Take Back the Night and Women, Rock, and Soul event. Patrick has also served on the President’s Cabinet.
The goal of the CWC is to help ensure a productive school and work environment for faculty and staff, particularly in areas related to women’s concerns. The group acts as a liaison from Fredonia employees to Administration, raising issues as they relate to policies and procedures affecting women in the University.
Dr. Sonnenfeld was the first female at SUNY Fredonia to serve as a Dean, and also achieved the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor during a 25-year career teaching German. She believed that the recipient of the scholarship should see the good in everyone and try to help others develop what is best in them.
The CWC will begin accepting applications from females, who are sophomores or juniors in the spring 2013 semester, who want to be considered scholarship candidates in the 2013-2014 school year.
