Student animation exhibition opens at Fredonia incubator
“Fredonia Animation: Art Meets Technology,” a showcase of work by current students and alumni of the Visual Arts and New Media Department, will be the first exhibition of the 2017-2018 academic year at the Fredonia Technology Incubator (FTI).
An opening reception on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., will provide an opportunity for community members to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments while viewing the artwork in the incubator’s art gallery. Reservations for the reception can be placed at online. Visitors can utilize the incubator’s parking lot adjacent to Washington Avenue.
The exhibition, made possible by a grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation, is free and open to the public. It can be viewed Aug. 28 through Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The incubator, part of Fredonia’s Division of Engagement and Economic Development and led by Dr. Kevin Kearns, is located at 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

The VANM Department’s Animation and Illustration program, led by Associate Professor Jill Johnston, integrates both disciplines in a unified curriculum where students participate in intro and intermediate courses for each area utilizing analog and digital media, a combined 3D modeling and animation class, advanced directed projects and a capstone illustrated series or senior independent animation.
The program focuses on drawing skills, concept development, experimentation, mixed media processes, narrative storytelling, historical research, critical thinking, and teamwork. Teams of students created several of the animation pieces in the exhibition.
