Student composers to present back-to-back concerts in November
The Ethos New Music Society at SUNY Fredonia will present a duet of concerts: Solos and Duets I and Solos and Duets II on Nov. 13 and 14, both at 6 p.m., in the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall.
The concerts will be filled with music for lone instruments as well as pairings. Each concert will be completely different, consisting entirely of music composed and performed by Fredonia students. The concerts will feature the works of student composers Jonathan Crocca, Sara Culhane, Joel Hunt and Adam Shanley of Rochester; Alex Northrup and Christopher Sobolewski of Webster, Scott Byrne of Northport, Scott Farkas of Stony Point, John Benware of Queensbury, Jay Mobley of Niskayuna and Joe Tracy of West Seneca.
Other events coming in the spring semester include the group’s annual NewSound festival, which this year will focus on the works of guests Morton Subotnick and Missy Mazzoli. Also this season, the electric string quartet "Ethel" will visit SUNY Fredonia in February as guests of Ethos. For more details, interested persons should visit the Ethos website.
Ethos is a student-run organization responsible for the presentation of four concerts each season, symposia featuring visiting composers, and field trips to hear new music in surrounding cities. Ethos is committed to the promotion of 20th and 21st century music at Fredonia, including standard repertoire and compositions by student and faculty composers. Funded by the Student Association, Ethos has, since its founding in 1977, actively encouraged the production of new music including the presentation of visiting composers and performers of national and international reputation. In 2006, Ethos’ contributions were recognized for their excellence in the creative arts. This year marks Ethos’ thirty-first season of active support of new music in Western New York.
