Ted Schwalbe will present his research into digital radio in U.S. to Hong Kong Baptist University

Distinguished Service Professor Ted Schwalbe of the Department of Communication spent most of the summer working on two research projects that will be presented at Hong Kong Baptist University at the end of September at the invitation of Acting Dean Ringo Ma. Dr. Ma was formerly a faculty member in the Department of Communication at SUNY Fredonia.

The first presentation details the experience in the U.S. with digital terrestrial radio. HD radio, as the system is known as in the U.S., has existed for 10 years. But adoption by the public has been very slow for a variety of reasons and it is doubtful it will ever become a meaningful technology.

The second presentation highlights the use of a variety of digital technologies (HD radio, streaming audio, web sites, and social media) used by radio stations in the U.S. It is based on in-person interviews that Dr. Schwalbe conducted with six radio stations (five from western New York and one from Washington D.C.). One of the highlights was that two of the interviewees were SUNY Fredonia communication alumni.
