Tetraphonics sax quartet to perform and offer master classes
The School of Music will present Tetraphonics, an acclaimed saxophone quartet from Germany, on Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m., in Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall.
The program will feature original pieces by Sally Beamish, Stephen Dankner, and an American premiere by Olga Kroupova. Mozart’s music will also be performed in two transcriptions arranged by quartet member Steffen Hass.
Fredonia saxophone students of Dr. Wildly Zumwalt and Dr. Diane Hunger will perform for Tetraphonics in two back-to-back master classes on Friday March 2, at 5 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall, and 6 p.m. in Mason Hall Room 1080.
All events are free and open to the public.
From different musical backgrounds, Mr. Hass, Elmar Frey, Volker Ax, and Noah Bedrin came together to form the blended saxophone quartet. They studied at universities and colleges in the U.S., the Netherlands and Germany. As freelance musicians, they have appeared in orchestras throughout Germany, such as the Gürzenich Orchester Cologne, the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle Bonn, the Bochum Symphony, the Orchestra of the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Freiburg Philharmonic, as well as symphony orchestras of several radio stations.
Tetraphonics has premiered many compositions specifically written for them by composers Christian Banasik, Michael Denhoff, Willy Giefer, Enjott Schneider, Stefan Thomas and Frank Zabel. In addition, they have been involved in interpreting original compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries and works of the classical quartet repertoire. They have also engaged in projects of quartet music with dance, recitations and music theater.
