Welcome Week rolls out red carpet to students; Activities Night on Wednesday

What do an ice cream, a popular 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film from Walt Disney Pictures and a block party have in common?

They were among a variety of attractions offered during Welcome Week, a popular Fredonia tradition hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board and sponsored by the Student Association that welcomes students to a new academic year. All events, held during the first week of classes, were free to Fredonia students.

Activities got underway with an ice cream social on Sunday, Aug. 20, at approximately 4:15 p.m. (following the New Student Convocation) in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.

“Moana,” which drew accolades for its animation, music and voice cast, along with Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, was screened under the stars in Dods Hall Grove on Monday, Aug. 21.

An evening of trivia and nachos was featured on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.

“Last Call Game Show,” which explored alcohol awareness trivia, was staged on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Prizes were awarded to the winning team. STEPS (Students Teaching Equals Positive Sexuality) co-hosted the program.

Bingo, Spectrum’s most popular event, was played on Thursday, Aug. 24, with prize giveaways.

A safari-themed block party, featuring food and music by Fredonia Sound Services and several Fredonia a cappella groups, was held on Friday, Aug. 25, on the Williams Center patio.

A tie-dyed session, hosted by WHOA (Weekend Hang Out Activities), was held on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Williams Center patio.

Activities Night, a showcase of over 170 clubs and organizations, will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Dods Hall Grove. Students are invited to learn about student groups and organizations and become involved in campus activities. Clubs looking to sign up for a table can find the link on the Campus Life website.

Artists donate items to raffle to support student medical mission to Honduras

A raffle, featuring items by well-known Fredonia area artists, will be held to raise money to support a student study abroad mission to Honduras. Students enrolled in the 2019 J-term course, Honduras Health Care, taught by Dr. Ted Lee, will conduct medical brigades and do service work at day-long clinics set up in schools or community centers in small rural communities.

Fredonia to host Safe Halloween for area children

The annual Safe Halloween, an event for local children and their parents/guardians, will be held at Fredonia on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon in Mason Hall. Guests are invited to come dressed up and ready for trick-or-treating. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Actress and alumna Mary McDonnell to return to Fredonia on Homecoming Weekend

Fredonia will welcome two-time Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe-nominated actress Mary McDonnell, Fredonia Class of '74, back to campus. She will join Department of Theatre and Dance Associate Professor Jessica Hillman-McCord at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Robert W. Marvel Theatre for “An Afternoon with Mary McDonnell,” in what promises to be a lively and informal conversation about the actress’ life and career on the Broadway stage, in film and in television.
