Women shine at RIT invitational

Fredonia's Nicole Desens (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Kristen Sawyer (Lockport, N.Y.) won events to lead the Blue Devils to a sixth-place finish at the RIT Tigers Invitational at the Gordon Fieldhouse.

Desens, a senior, won the women's shot put at 12.82 meters -- a personal best which is ranked third best on the Fredonia women's indoor performance list. She also finished fourth in the 20-pound weight throw at 14.16 meters (46 feet, 5 ½ inches).

Sawyer, a freshman, finished first in the pole vault, by clearing 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches). She was joined in the scoring column by three teammates. Freshman Julia Schreier (Lockport, N.Y.) was second, while freshman Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown, N.Y.) and junior Olivia Kurbs (Lockport, N.Y.) tied for fourth. They earned 27 team points of Fredonia's 62-point meet total in the event.

The Blue Devils also earned 16 points in the shot -- 10 for the win by Desens and three each by junior Brianne Paganello (Batavia, N.Y.) and freshman Rachel Williams (Lockport, N.Y.), who tied for fifth place. In addition to the fourth place by Desens in the weight throw, senior Jenna Fiacco (Verona, N.Y.) was third and junior Heather Rickman (Brockport, N.Y.) seventh -- good for a total of 13 team points.

Meanwhile, senior Meghan Devine (Clarence, N.Y.) finished sixth in the triple jump and Capestrani was seventh in the long jump.

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
