Works by 18 senior art majors will be on display in SUNY Fredonia’s Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery through May 10.

The works are part of the spring senior exhibition “Hodge Podge,” which opened with a reception on May 1. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, runs through May 10. The Marion Art Gallery is located on the main level of Rockefeller Arts Center on the Fredonia campus.

The artists chose the title “Hodge Podge” because it embodies the concept of diversity and disorder. Its 15th century origin is “hochepot,” a thick stew of various ingredients, which paved the way for its modern usage in describing a chaotic mixture of elements.

The Marion exhibition includes paintings, animated short films (stop motion, 2D, and rotoscope), animatics, character designs and concept art for animation, mixed media sculpture, ceramic installations and a puppet installation.

Participating artists are:

  • Andrea Conner (Animation and Illustration, Falconer, NY)
  • Rylee Crandall (Animation and Illustration, Herkimer, NY)
  • Sarah R. Crouse (Ceramics, South Dayton, NY)
  • Katherine David (Ceramics, Frewsburg, NY)

“Hodge Podge” is supported by the Department of Visual Arts and New Media and the Fredonia College Foundation’s Cathy and Jesse Marion Endowment Fund. Graphic Design students Jacob Allert, Alexis Barron, Lauren Carroll, and Emily Payne assisted with designing the exhibition poster.

The mission of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media is to provide a balanced, comprehensive undergraduate education that advances both studio practice and theoretical/historical studies. It aims to develop students’ creative, practical, and conceptual skills while fostering an understanding of the cultural, philosophical, and historical contexts of contemporary art within a liberal arts framework.

Marion Art Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Gallery Director Barbara Räcker via email at Barbara.racker@fredonia.edu or call (716) 673-4897.
