Fredonia State softball had a dominant showing in a SUNYAC doubleheader sweep over Canton on Saturday, highlighted by a no-hitter from Sabrina Edwards-Smith in game two, as the Devils won both games by 8-0 scores.
Game One:
In game one, Fredonia wasted no time setting the tone with a three-run first inning. Avery Hill got the scoring started with an RBI double to left, followed by a sacrifice fly from Chloe Whittingham to bring in another run. The Devils added a third run in the frame on a defensive miscue by the Roos to jump out early 3-0.
The Devils struck again in the fourth inning when Kim Dorane delivered an RBI bunt single that helped plate a run, while Alexa Bogad later brought in another as part of a three-run inning that stretched the lead to 6-0. The Devils added insurance in the sixth when Hill came through again with an RBI double, and another run crossed shortly after to cap the scoring at eight.
Kendall Phillips was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out 10 to earn the win and improve to 6-9 on the season. Canton's Sydney Tanner took the loss, falling to 2-9.
Game Two:
In game two, Sabrina Edwards-Smith was nearly untouchable in the circle, throwing a five-inning no-hitter while allowing just one walk. The Devils backed her up early, scoring three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Brooke Caldwell RBI double while Chloe Whittingham added an RBI on a fielder's choice, and another run came across as the Devils capitalized on defensive miscues to build a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Madison DeVore added to the lead with an RBI single to make it 4-0. Fredonia State broke the game open in the fourth, scoring three more runs. DeVore delivered again with an RBI single, while Caldwell added another RBI knock as part of the rally. The Devils tacked on one more in the fifth inning when Mack Celauro drove in a run with a double to seal the 8-0 victory.
Edwards-Smith earned the win to move to 2-6 on the year, while Canton's Arianna Steele took the loss, dropping to 0-3.
With the sweep, Fredonia improves to 10-18 overall and 5-5 in SUNYAC play.
Fredonia State will return to action at home on Tuesday, April 21 for a non-conference doubleheader against Hilbert, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
