Nickerson gives talk on AI impact on financial environment

Mark A. Nickerson, lecturer in the School of Business, gave a presentation, “The Potential Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Accounting and Financial Scandals,” to faculty members on March 21 in Thompson Hall. The talk was based on an article he wrote which will be published in the magazine “Strategic Finance.”

While acknowledging that recent regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Dodd-Frank, have helped to mitigate investor fears and restore confidence by emphasizing fiduciary responsibility, Mr. Nickerson posits that a new challenge may be coming soon. This uncharted territory is how will the implementation of artificial intelligence impact the current financial environment as executives and accountants seek ways to improve efficiencies in laborious analytical work and strategic decision making.

The article is to appear in the April issue. Strategic Finance is the award-winning flagship publication of the Institute of Management Accountants.
