Several solid performances in season-opener

The Fredonia State men won one event and had several other solid performances Saturday while opening its 2019-20 indoor track and field season at Brockport's SERC.

The 4-by-200 relay team finished second but was placed first through disqualification. The quartet was made up of Tyler Pinnock, Dan Sudyn, Devin Eddy, and Jonah McGrath. They had a season-opening time of 1:37.44.

Aidan Pollard and Noah Watkins finished second and third in the 5,000 meters. Pollard's 15:36.84 was just over 12 seconds behind the winner. Watkins checked in at 16:03.98. Both times were collegiate personal-bests.

Brian Freebern was third of 13 runners in the mile. His was clocked in 4:55.19.

Of the 26 men in the 400 meters, Alec Wright was sixth and Topher Elkins seventh.  Wright was timed in 52.02 seconds, one-tenth of a second head of Elkins in his collegiate debut. Those two and Griffin Dombroske qualified for the SUNYAC meet.

Collin Barmore finished second in his college track & field debut, coming in at 9:07.28 in the 3,000 meters. It was also a SUNYAC qualifying time.

Fredonia State's "A" 4-by-400 relay quartet finished a tight third in a clocking of 3:30.69, just .77 seconds short of hitting the tape first. Elkins, Dombroske, Toby Onuoha, and Marcus Torres made up the group. Fredonia State's "B" squad was fifth.

In field events, Onuoha had a strong showing in his collegiate debut in the high jump. He cleared 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1 ¼ inches) to finish third in a field of 13, including a post-grad jumper who won the event.

McGrath finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40 meters (14 feet, 5 ¼ inches) on his second try. The winner cleared the height on his first try. It was a regional qualifying mark for McGrath, who also fifth in the triple jump at 13.24 meters (43 feet, 5 ¼ inches).

Eddy was fourth in the long jump at 6.46 meters (21 feet, 2 ½ inches) in a field of 16 men.
