“Don Giovanni,” one of the most widely produced operas, will be presented by the Hillman Memorial Music Association, in collaboration with Fredonia’s School of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance, at Marvel Theatre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9, 10 and 11.
Fredonia alumna and Professor Julie L. Newell of the School of Music has been selected to receive the Jessie Hillman Award for Excellence.
The Fredonia School of Music’s third Sorel Piano Competition in November will include a special feature, made possible through the generosity of the Steinway Company, showcasing Van Cliburn’s personal Steinway piano. Members of the community are also invited to play on the historic instrument during the three-day installation on the Fredonia campus.
A highly select group of young pianists will perform in the final round of the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition on Saturday, Nov. 3, beginning at noon, at Rosch Recital Hall. The pool of 30 talented applicants – the largest ever in the competition’s three-year history – represent 12 states and three foreign countries.
The Merrins Chamber Series by the Fredonia Dance Ensemble makes its debut with performances on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 and 7:30 p.m., in the James and Marcia Merrins Dance Theatre at Rockefeller Arts Center.
The Fredonia Bassoon Ensemble will present its fall concert on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall, performing transcribed and original works by Antonio Vivaldi, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Tomaso Albinoni, Johann Kugelmann, Ernesto Nazareth, John Zamecnik and Astor Piazzolla.
On Saturday, Oct. 20, piano students in the Fredonia School of Music will be offering 30-minute lessons for $15 dollars during Piano Day. There are 30-minute time slots starting at 9 a.m., continuing until 7 p.m.
The College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge, begins another season featuring School of Music Concerto Competition winner Grace Jang playing the first movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto, on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m., in King Concert Hall.
