The Second City Touring Company brings the cure to Fredonia

Concerto Competition winners announced by School of Music

The Fredonia School of Music has announced pianist Jesse Bonaventura, clarinetist Guangzhao Haung and percussionist Dennis O'Keefe as winners of the Annual Concerto Competition, held in King Concert Hall on Sunday, April 30. The two-hour long event included performances by nine talented music students, all competing for the coveted honor of being named Concert Competition winner.

Opening pops event features songs of Carole King, James Taylor

The music of two pop icons from the 1970s will be featured when Rockefeller Arts Center presents “You’ve Got A Friend: The Music of Carole King and James Taylor” on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall. Two long-time friends and collaborators hit songwriter Kirsti Manna and national recording artist Jonathan Birchfield capture the essence of friendship through music with their dynamic performances.

Jazz/classical pianist Weiser joins School of Music faculty

Dr. Nick Weiser, a pianist steeped in both the jazz and classical idioms who has performed at events as far reaching as the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, and Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, has joined the School of Music as an assistant professor.

Concerto winner to perform Gershwin with Fredonia symphony

Jesse Bonaventura, pianist and winner of the annual Concerto Competition, will perform the first movement of George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F with the Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, Nov. 11, 8 p.m., in King Concert Hall.

Fredonia Guitar Quartet to perform at schools in central New York

The student Guitar Quartet will be on tour in central New York in mid-November, performing at Henrietta-Rush Senior High School on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m.; Unatego Junior-Senior High School on Friday, Nov. 17, 12:40 p.m., and Onondaga Community College, also Friday, at 7 p.m.

Dezsö to speak at incubator

Artist and illustrator Andrea Dezsö will speak about the business aspects of her work and career at the Fredonia Technology Incubator’s Arts and Business Luncheon series Friday, Sept. 15, from noon to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided; however, since space is limited, a registration is required.

Young pianists invited to enter Claudette Sorel Piano Competition

Student entries for the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, an annual event that celebrates the creativity and excellence of young pianists and awards cash prizes, are being accepted by the School of Music. For the first round, participants are to submit an online entry form (there is no application fee) and provide a link to a high-quality video of a piece they are passionate about, approximately five to eight minutes in length. The deadline to apply is Sept. 25.

Wind Ensemble to present eclectic concert

The Fredonia Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, will escort music enthusiasts on an exhilarating journey on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 8 p.m., in King Concert Hall. “Short Ride on a Fast Machine,” John Adams’ American classic of his ride on a fast machine through the hills of California, will open the concert.

Shakespeare favorite is next offering in Fredonia Mainstage Series

One of William Shakespeare’s most popular works will be the next offering in the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series. The Department of Theatre and Dance will present six performances of “Much Ado About Nothing” from Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 in Bartlett Theatre. The director is Theatre and Dance Professor Paul Mockovak.
