Buffalo News Editor is keynote at 4th Annual Journalism Conference on Saturday

Buffalo News Editor Mike Connelly will deliver the keynote address as the SUNY Fredonia student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists presents its annual conference on Saturday, April 5.

The conference will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Connelly delivering his address at 1:30 p.m. Other speakers scheduled to appear include Buffalo Spree Editor Elizabeth Licata, WGRZ-TV reporter Danny Spewak, WIVB-TV reporter Ed Drantch, social media expert Ben Kirst of Quinlan & Co., WEDG-FM radio satirist/DJ Tom Ragan and Dan Scharfenberger, nightside senior producer of Time Warner Cable News in Syracuse.

The event is free and open to the public. Early speakers will be featured in Fenton Hall rooms 175 and 180. The keynote will take place in Thompson Hall Room 101.

Connelly, who joined The News in 2012, is the former executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. His staff in Sarasota won a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 for investigative reporting on Florida's property insurance industry. Connelly began his career as a copy editor for the national news desk of the Wall Street Journal. He also has worked for Congressional Quarterly Inc., the Baltimore Sun and the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press. Connelly will address the challenges facing The News in the current media environment, and how the paper is dealing with them.

Artists donate items to raffle to support student medical mission to Honduras

A raffle, featuring items by well-known Fredonia area artists, will be held to raise money to support a student study abroad mission to Honduras. Students enrolled in the 2019 J-term course, Honduras Health Care, taught by Dr. Ted Lee, will conduct medical brigades and do service work at day-long clinics set up in schools or community centers in small rural communities.

Fredonia to host Safe Halloween for area children

The annual Safe Halloween, an event for local children and their parents/guardians, will be held at Fredonia on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon in Mason Hall. Guests are invited to come dressed up and ready for trick-or-treating. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Actress and alumna Mary McDonnell to return to Fredonia on Homecoming Weekend

Fredonia will welcome two-time Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe-nominated actress Mary McDonnell, Fredonia Class of '74, back to campus. She will join Department of Theatre and Dance Associate Professor Jessica Hillman-McCord at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Robert W. Marvel Theatre for “An Afternoon with Mary McDonnell,” in what promises to be a lively and informal conversation about the actress’ life and career on the Broadway stage, in film and in television.
