Cooper wins 800 at Mid-Season Classic

Bobby Cooper (Macedon, N.Y. /Gananda) won the 800-meter run Saturday with a time of 1:59.06 as the Fredonia Blue Devil men's track and field team finished third in team points at the Brockport Mid-Season Classic. Cooper's time was a personal-best.

The Fredonia distance runners finished 1-2-3 in the 1-mile run. Zack Hess (Newark, N.Y. /North Rose - Wolcott) crossed the finish line first with a time of 4:23.86. He was quickly followed by teammate Pat Shenal (Henrietta, N.Y. /Rush-Henrietta) and Jack Erhard (Syracuse, N.Y. /West Genesee) in second and third place with times of 4:31.25 and 4:33.57, respectively.

The Blue Devils had one other first-place finisher on the men's side as Rocky Caparro (Staten Island, N.Y. /Susan E. Wagner) won the triple jump with a distance of 13.50 meters.

Several other athletes on the men's side earned the team points. Chris Shartrand (Ballston Spa, N.Y. /Shenendehowa) was the second-place finisher in the 5000-meter run and Mitch Paciga (Jeffersonville, N.Y. /Sullivan West) was third in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters.

In the throwing events, Damone Brown (Haverstraw, N.Y. /North Rockland) finished fourth in the shot put at 13.71 meters. Brian Bernier (Ballston Spa, N.Y. /Ballston Spa) was seventh in the event with a throw of 13.29 meters. Sawyer Bell (Middletown, N.Y. /Roy C. Ketchum) finished third in the 35-pound weight throw at 14.88 meters.

Relay sets school mark

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

Pellechia earns fourth SUNYAC title

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
