Dambacher sprints to one 1st, one 2nd
Anna Dambacher (Soph.; Divernon, Ill.) won one SUNYAC title and set two school records Saturday during the 2014 SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field championship meet at SUNY Geneseo.
Dambacher won the 100 meters in 12.03 seconds and was second in the 200 meters in 24.50 seconds. She lowered her own school records in both events. In addition, she moved the NCAA performance lists in both sprints -- up to the top 10 in each, pending the outcome of other Division III meets across the country Saturday.
Including points earned in a relay, Dambacher had a total of 19.2 points, most by all female track athletes and third most overall. The Blue Devils finished sixth out of eight teams with 83 team points.
Joining Dambacher on the All-SUNYAC team were second-place finishers Kayleigh Wasielewski (Soph.; West Seneca, N.Y.), Nicole Desens (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), and Emily Cummiskey (Sr.; Clarence, N.Y.). In addition, Laura Morrison (Soph.; Wethersfield, Conn.) broke a 28-year-old school record.
Wasielewski finished second in the women's heptathlon with a score of 3,419 points. Her best events were the high jump (1.59 meters / 5 feet, 2.5 inches), the 100-meter hurdles (16.13 seconds), and the 200 meters (27.58 seconds). Wasilewski also tied for fifth in the open high jump (1.53 meters / 5 feet, one-quarter inch).
Cummiskey finished second in the triple jump (11.08 meters / 36 feet, 4.25 inches), while Desens was second in the shot put (12.18 meters / 39 feet, 11.5 inches). In addition, Desens was third in the discus (40.12 meters / 131 feet, 7 inches) on Saturday after finishing fourth in the hammer throw (41.85 meters / 137 feet, 4 inches) on Friday. The three top four placements earned Desens 19 team points, fourth most in the meet.
Also Saturday, Morrison broke the school record in the 800 meters when she clocked out in 2:17.69 during preliminaries Friday. That cut nearly three seconds off her previous-best time. In addition, she moved past three other women on the Fredonia State all-time performance list -- Jennifer McNerney, Aimee Milks, and previous record-holder Sharon Raymond, who ran 2:19.24 in May 1986. Morrison ran 2:19.51 during Saturday's 800 final to finish fifth in the event.
Hailey Griewisch (Jr.; Dunkirk, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.32 seconds) during Saturday's session. She teamed with Dambacher, Devinne Arnold (Fr.; Cuba, N.Y.), and Alexis Perez (Sr.; Hamburg, N.Y.) to finish fourth in the 4-by-100 relay (49.40 seconds). The Blue Devils were also eighth in the 4-by-800 relay.
The Blue Devils entered Saturday in fifth place with 20.5 points from Friday. Anna Hourihan (Sr.; Buffalo, N.Y.) earned six points by finishing third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:47.66. Olivia Kurbs (Soph.; Lockport, N.Y.) tied for fifth in the pole vault (3.10 meters / 10 feet, 2 inches). Jenna Fiacco (Jr.; Verona, N.Y.) and Meghan Devine (Jr.; Clarence, N.Y.) were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the javelin. Fiacco threw 29.18 meters (95 feet, 9 inches), and Devine 28.08 meters (92 feet, 1 inch).
