First Annual Stroke Awareness Walk draws over 130 participants

The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders at SUNY Fredonia held its first Stroke Awareness Walk on Sept. 18. The event was well attended with approximately 132 participants comign from across Western New York.

The goal of the Stroke Awareness Walk was to promote community awareness of stroke, stroke prevention, and the possible deficits resulting from a stroke. Additionally, the walk was intended to make the public and medical professionals aware of the various services available at the Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders.

Free hearing screenings, educational handouts and informational brochures from the center were offered to participants and members of the community at the event. The first stroke awareness walk was organized by Julie Williams, Coordinator of the Stroke/Head Injury Support Group. Faculty, professional staff, and students (graduate and undergraduate) from the Department of Communication Disorders & Sciences also participated in the walk which covered over two miles along Central Avenue and the SUNY Fredonia campus.
