Linda Dorsten receives Ford Foundation Fellowship

Dr. Linda Dorsten, sociology, has been selected as one of five recipients of a 2009-2010 OYCF-Ford Foundation Fellowship. During summer 2010, she will teach Research Methods to, and conduct research with, faculty from area universities enrolled in graduate education at Xinjiang University in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China.

In August 2009 Dr. Dorsten and research colleague Dr. Yuhui Li (Rowan University) were invited by Xinjiang University administration to present their research on Chinese ethnic minorities, which includes interviews with Uyghur and Hui, to faculty from area universities.

According to their website, Overseas Youth Chinese Forum (OYCF) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization based in the United States. Established in 1999, OYCF aims to promote cooperation and exchange of ideas between China and the rest of the world, and it provides a forum for interdisciplinary discussions among scholars, students and professionals on social, economic, political and cultural issues concerning China.

Strauss to conduct area concerts

Dr. Robert Strauss will conduct the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus in “ WALK TOGETHER,” a concert to be performed at three sites in May and featuring “Tyler’s Suite,” a nine-song cycle about the life and death of Tyler Clementi, as well as songs from, or about, Buffalo, NY.
