A large group of faculty and students from SUNY Fredonia recently participated in the annual conference of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, held Nov. 7 to 9 in Buffalo.

Eighteen senior undergraduates taking Methods in Teaching Mathematics from Professors Teodora Cox and Keary Howard presented lesson ideas in three sessions. Attendance by middle and high school teachers from across the state was "standing room only."

Nine undergraduate Childhood Inclusive Education majors concentrating in Mathematics, led by Professor Rebecca Conti, contributed hands-on projects for the, "Make It, Take It," room. Many teachers stopped by during breaks in the conference schedule to check out what the students had to offer.

The following SUNY Fredonia faculty gave presentations:

  • “Community Outreach 1-2-3” by Kimberly Conti and Dr. Cox
  • “Projects and Labs Perfect for Your Common Core Classroom) by Dr. Howard
  • “Real-World Math for Earth's Sake,” by Dr. Jill Marshall
  • “Problem Solving in Elementary Grades: Posing, Puzzling, Publishing,” by Dr. Jamar Pickreign
  • “'Fredonia Rogers' and the Quest to Make Imaginary Numbers Real,” by Dr. Bob Rogers
  • “Do You Believe in Magic? Magic Squares, That Is!,” by Dr. H. Joseph Straight
Among the many alumni who attended the conference were Amanda Pacanowski from Fredonia Middle School, who presented, ""Gettin' 'Techie' with It," and Hannah Wawrowski from Lake Shore High School, who spoke on, "Only Five IPads! When am I Ever Going to Use This?"
