Mulcahy wins SUNYAC's 1,500 title

Fredonia State sophomore Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y.) finished first in the men's 1,500 meters at the 2014 SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field chammpionship meet Saturday at SUNY Geneseo.

Mulcahy's 3:57.02 was .85 of a second faster than the second-place runner, Alex Ngabo of Buffalo State, who came into the meet seeded No. 1 in the event. Mulcahy also finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:03.06) and earned 12 team points total, tied for eighth most among runners. He was named All-SUNYAC as a result of his first-place finish.

Fredonia State had 51 total points to finish seventh out of eight teams.

Fredonia State's second-best outcome Saturday was a third place by Chris Shartrand (Jr.; Ballston Spa, N.Y.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Shartrand edged teammate Steve Whittemore (Sr.; Penfield, N.Y.), who finished fourth. Their times were 9:36.48 and 9:38.77, respectively, and together they accounted for 11 points. Both qualified for the ECAC championship meet next weekend.

The Blue Devils other best single event was the men's decathlon, where Tyler Gajawski (Soph.; Dunkirk, N.Y.), Doug Imperi (Sr.; Angola, N.Y.), and Brendan Long (Fr.; Clinton Corners, N.Y.), were sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively, to combine for six points. Gajewski's score of 5,168 points included a 11.84-second 100-meter dash, good for 683 points. Imperi's best event was also the 100 meters -- 11.87 seconds for 677 of his 4,808 points.

Also Saturday, Jeremy Kozlowski (Soph.; Dunkirk, N.Y.) finished third in the 400 meters (50.92 seconds) and Hsin Chin (Soph.; Pleasant View, N.Y.) third in the discus (40.85 meters / 134 feet). Fredonia State men were seventh in 4-by-100 relay and eighth in the 4-by-800 relay.

Friday's top finisher was Ben Goebel (Sr.; Victor, N.Y.), who cleared 4.50 meters (14 feet, 9 inches) in the pole vault, and finished second in the event to earn All-SUNYAC recognition and entry into next weekend's ECAC meet. He also earned eight team points.

Also Friday, Kevin Geiser (Soph.; Corning, N.Y.) was sixth in the javelin and Chin seventh in the hammer throw. Geiser's throw covered 45.81 meters (150 feet, 3 inches). Chin's hammer throw was 44.39 meters (145 feet, 8 inches).
