Puerto Rican artist Yasmin Hernandez to display work on Oct. 3
SUNY Fredonia’s Latinos Unidos will be hosting Puerto Rican artist Yasmin Hernandez to display her work and speak with students on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8:30 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 202.
Ms. Hernandez was born and raised in Brooklyn and has stayed true to her Puerto Rican roots. Her work has been shown in Puerto Rico and Eastern Harlem, and is rooted in struggles for personal, political and spiritual liberation.
The artist has been recognized primarily for her art work with social justice themes. She has received several awards including an Artist/Activist of the Year award in 2006 by New York City’s Art for Change. The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College CUNY awarded her the Ramon Feliciano Social Justice Prize. Ms. Hernandez has also received an Outstanding Latinas Award by the New York-based Spanish-language newspaper, El Diario La Prensa.
The event is free and open to the student body and the Fredonia and Dunkirk community. Anyone interested in Latin American art, and multicultural studies is encouraged to attend the event.
