Saturday sweep at Beach Blast

Fredonia won both its games Saturday during the Virginia Wesleyan University Beach Blast.

Game 1 -- Fredonia 7, Eastern 2

Highlights -- The game featured a 16-hit attack, including a 4 for 4 performance (two doubles, two singles) by junior Katelyn Dennis (Webster) and three hits by junior Nikki Lent (Yaphank). The first Fredonia home run of the season was struck by freshman Madison Cooley (Geneva) leading off the fourth inning while senior Khee Nance (Dunkirk), sophomore Cassie Herman (Maybrook), and senior Erin Mushtare (Oneonta) had two hits each. Freshman right-hander Katie Yudin (Liverpool) was the beneficiary to earn her first collegiate win in 4 2/3 innings of work. Fellow freshman Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda) relieved in the fifth and got an inning-ending strikeout to get out of a jam. Seegar allowed one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Game 2 -- Fredonia 8, Shenandoah 0 (5 innings)

Highlights -- Dennis picked up where she left and sophomore right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa.) tossed a five-inning shutout as the Blue Devils completed a sweep of their Saturday games and improved to 3-1. Dennis had two singles and three RBI in her first two at-bats to extend her streak to six straight hits. Nance and Lent stayed hot, too, with two hits each. Senior catcher Sarah Cuillo (Blasdell) also had two hits ... Shellenberger allowed three hits and struck out two as she picked up her first win of the season (1-0). Shenandoah (3-5) came into the game averaging just under 10 runs per game.

What's next? -- The Blue Devils are off until Thursday afternoon when they take on Nebraska Wesleyan, the first of 12 games during The Spring Games in and around Clermont, Fla.

The 4 x 100 relay team of Cameron Sample, Jordan Lockett, Jacob Winn, and Nick Marsowicz set a new Fredonia State outdoor record, finishing the race in 42.19 seconds. It was a regional-qualifying time, and .17 seconds behind the first-place Cortland team.

For the fourth time in four tries, pole vaulter Cara Pellechia can call herself a SUNYAC Champion. Pellechia cleared 3.50m to take the outdoor title at the SUNYAC Meet on Friday.
