School of Music alumna a Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals

Fredonia alumna and soprano Danielle Beckvermit was named a Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals, representing the Eastern Region.

This is the second consecutive year a Fredonia School of Music graduate has reached the Grand Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council competition. Alumnus Kyle van Schoonhoven was a winner in the 2017 Grand Finals.

Ms. Beckvermit, a 2015 Fredonia School of Music graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance, performed at the semi-finals Sunday, April 22, at Lincoln Center in New York City, and was named one of nine singers to compete on Sunday, April 29, in the Grand Finals Concert for cash prizes.

Beckvermit earned her master’s degree in 2017 at Mannes School of Music-The New School in New York City, where she continues as a professional studies student. She will make her Carnegie Hall mainstage debut in May as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s “Requiem” with The Cecilia Chorus of New York, and then head to Crested Butte, Colo., to perform the role of Alice in a production of “Falstaff.” Beckvermit’s next move is to Minneapolis, Minn., where she will be a Resident Artist at Minnesota Opera.

The Finalists performing at Lincoln Center at the Grand Finals will be accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The host for the event is opera singer Joyce DiDonato.

Additional finalists include Ashley Dixon, mezzo-soprano, Northwest Region; Jessica Faselt, soprano, Upper Midwest Region; Megan Grey, mezzo-soprano, Upper Midwest Region; Gretchen Krupp, mezzo-soprano, Central Region; Madison Leonard, soprano, Middle Atlantic Region; Emily Misch, soprano, Eastern Region; Carlos Santelli, tenor, Western Region, and Hongni Wu, mezzo-soprano, Eastern Region.

Artists donate items to raffle to support student medical mission to Honduras

A raffle, featuring items by well-known Fredonia area artists, will be held to raise money to support a student study abroad mission to Honduras. Students enrolled in the 2019 J-term course, Honduras Health Care, taught by Dr. Ted Lee, will conduct medical brigades and do service work at day-long clinics set up in schools or community centers in small rural communities.

Fredonia to host Safe Halloween for area children

The annual Safe Halloween, an event for local children and their parents/guardians, will be held at Fredonia on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon in Mason Hall. Guests are invited to come dressed up and ready for trick-or-treating. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Actress and alumna Mary McDonnell to return to Fredonia on Homecoming Weekend

Fredonia will welcome two-time Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe-nominated actress Mary McDonnell, Fredonia Class of '74, back to campus. She will join Department of Theatre and Dance Associate Professor Jessica Hillman-McCord at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Robert W. Marvel Theatre for “An Afternoon with Mary McDonnell,” in what promises to be a lively and informal conversation about the actress’ life and career on the Broadway stage, in film and in television.
