School of Music welcomes two Grammy winners in 2013-14

Two Grammy Award winners -- legendary jazz musician Arturo Sandoval and the multifaceted Los Angeles Guitar Quartet – will help make the 2013-2014 concert season memorable at SUNY Fredonia with a pair of performances hosted by the School of Music.
Sandoval, whose celebrated career is underscored by nine Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy, will present an eclectic program of Latin jazz accompanied by a small group of professional musicians on Monday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. at Rosch Recital Hall. The combo joining him includes SUNY Fredonia faculty members Bruce Johnstone (saxophone) and John Bacon (drums), along with noted Buffalo-area musicians Bobby Jones (keyboard), Jeff Campbell (bass) and Wendell Rivera (percussion).
The Fredonia Latin Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Bacon, will also perform at the concert.
Sandoval, a Cuban jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer, is considered one of today’s most dynamic and vivacious live performers. He was a protégé of jazz master Dizzy Gillespie and has demonstrated his versatility by performing with Woody Herman, Woody Shaw and Bill Conti and accompanying Celine Dion, Justine Timberlake and Alicia Keys.
In addition to the concert, Sandoval, also a renowned classical musician and composer, will give a master class. Sandoval’s residency is being funded by Hodgson Russ, LLP.
The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, touted as “the world’s hottest classical ensemble or its tightest pop band” by the Los Angeles Times, will perform Friday, April 4, 2014 at 8 p.m. at Rosch. John Dearman, Matthew Greif, William Kanengiser and Scott Tennant bring considerable excitement to the stage with an exciting mix of Latin, African, Far East, Irish, Folk and American classics. The quartet delivers a fresh look at music of the past through their inventive, critically acclaimed transcriptions of concert masterworks.
The Fredonia Guitar Ensemble, led by James Piorkowski, will appear with the quartet in a joint performance. Both groups will perform 'SHIKI: Seasons of Japan,” written specifically for the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet plus guitar orchestra by Japanese composer Shingo Fujii.
