Screen test for new environmental documentary featuring Professor Sherri Mason

A new documentary about gum, “A Sticky Situation,” is having its first rough cut test screenings on campus in February.

The first viewings took place Monday, Feb. 24, but the film will be re-shown on Friday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at Jewett Hall Room 101.The screening is free and open to the public.

“A Sticky Situation,” by Andrew Bismark details the history of gum from its early beginnings as a natural product made from tree sap to its current form that is made from plastic. The film includes an interview with SUNY Fredonia's own Sherri (Sam) Mason, professor of chemistry, on the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment.

Mason has conducted extensive research on plastic pollution within freshwater ecosystems, specifically the Great Lakes. She is currently conducting a year-long beach survey to work towards understanding the seasonality of plastics within this system and investigating wastewater treatment plants. She plans to conduct more open-water sampling campaigns during the summer.
