Second guest artist to offer dance classes for campus community
Another guest artist of the Fredonia Dance Ensemble will be offering two free classes in October that will be open to the entire campus community.
Cheryl Halliburton-Beatty, associate professor of Dance Studies at C.W. Post and co-director of the Post Concert Dance Company, will be at SUNY Fredonia for a week-long guest artist residency with the Fredonia Dance Ensemble. She is choreographing a piece for the Dance Ensemble’s annual concert in February.
Halliburton-Beatty specializes in African Dance and Modern Dance. She will teach an African Dance class on Friday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m., and on Thursday, Oct. 10, she will teach an Afro-Jazz class from 5 to 7 p.m., both in Dods Hall Room 148.
Both events are free and open to the campus community.
Halliburton-Beatty has worked as a dancer and choreographer on both the East and West Coasts. In the San Francisco Bay area, she performed with a number of modern jazz dance companies as well as having her own dance production company (H & H Productions). Additionally, she taught at various dance studios as well as at Stanford University.
In Philadelphia, Pa., she taught company classes at Matthews School of Dance and was lead dancer/captain of Craig (Spider) Moore’s Afrocentric modern dance company New World African Dance Theatre. After moving to New York, she danced with Cara Gargano Dance Company and joined the faculty at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, helping to develop and implement the dance studies major and becoming the first director of the Dance Program.
She also has been involved as a teaching artist for Tilles Center’s arts-in-education programs. More recently, she has produced the annual Faculty Benefit Dance Concert, a fundraising component of the Dance Program that has become a venue for emerging choreographers and professional dancers. She also is actively involved in community education programs, serving as the liaison between the C.W. Post's Dance Program and Glen Cove High School.
