SIFE team to launch tree-planting project on Earth Day
On April 22, Earth Day, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, will be launching “Make Your Mark,” the first tree planting project at SUNY Fredonia. The drive will aim to educate students, faculty, and organizations on the effects of everyday acts such as wasting paper, leaving the lights on, and “sharking” for parking spots, which increase one’s carbon footprint.
The 30 trees will be planted in the area located between the Williams Center and the Kirkland Complex. The varieties of trees that will be planted have been selected by Biology Professor Dr. Jonathan Titus, and they are:
- 10 Autumn Radiance Red Maple
- 10 London Plane 4’ Light Branched
- 10 Red Oak 3’ Whips
- All of the trees will be in biodegradable pots or baskets when they will be planted.
Adding an international connection, the SIFE team will be partnering with a non-profit organization called, “The Shanghai Million Trees Project,” which began in 2007. The non-profit organization aims to raise community awareness of the Earth’s environment, while focusing on steps individuals can take to lessen their negative impact. For each tree planted in Fredonia through “Make Your Mark,” another tree will be directly planted in Malaysia to help their mission of plating one million trees.
A donation of $30 will allow for two threes to be planted, one in Fredonia and the second in Shanghai. Donations will be accepted in cash or checks and made out to the Fredonia College Foundation.
By supporting the efforts of the SIFE team and of The Shanghai Million Trees Project, SUNY Fredonia can make its mark, and branch out into the local and international community.
