FREDONIA, N.Y. — Oct. 16, 2008 — Kathy Dyckes and Joyce Dziduch, secretaries with over six decades of combined service at SUNY Fredonia, shared the spotlight as recipients of separate awards at the SUNY Fredonia Secretarial/Clerical Professional Development Group’s fall conference.

The Barbara Saletta Meritorious Service Award, established through the Fredonia College Foundation, was presented to Ms. Dyckes, who has worked in the Department of Sports Management and Exercise Science for 14 of her 35 years at SUNY Fredonia. She previously served as a library clerk at the Reed Library.

“I was so surprised and felt so honored to receive the award,” said Ms. Dyckes. “Barb Saletta was a wonderful person who was well-known on the campus and is missed very much.”

Ms. Dyckes, a resident of Fredonia and graduate of Dunkirk High School, primarily assists the athletic directors and sports coaches, and arranges appointments for students.

The Poummit Secretarial Award in Memory of Janet Marks, a former secretary to the president of SUNY Fredonia, was presented to Ms. Dziduch, who began her career in 1965 as a receptionist in the president’s office until 1974. She has been serving the Alumni Affairs office since 1994.

Ms. Dziduch’s duties include maintaining the alumni database and Web site, taking reservations for all alumni events, transcribing the minutes of the alumni board meetings, and collating information for booklets and programs for the Alumni Affairs office. “I was very happy to hear that I had received the award,” said Ms. Dziduch. “I felt so honored and am especially thankful for my nomination by Patty Feraldi, the director of alumni relations.”

Also a Fredonia resident, Ms. Dziduch graduated from Forestville High School and attended Bryant and Stratton College for her secretarial science degree.

The award was established through the Fredonia College Foundation by the late Morris R. Poummit, who was a graduate of SUNY Fredonia and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, a former member of the Fredonia College Foundation Board of Directors, and past chairman of the Board of Collegiate Advertisers (C.O.L.A.D.).

Both awards, established through the Fredonia College Foundation, honor secretarial/clerical staff members for an outstanding service attitude, creativity and resourcefulness, demonstrated team effort and personal integrity and leadership. The recipients received a framed certificate and monetary award from President Dennis L. Hefner.

Nearly 85 staff members attended the conference, held recently at Fredonia’s College Lodge in Brocton. Other conference topics included a seminar on Secretary Leaders by Sylvia Hall, Co-Leader for University Center for Training and Development, a Lakeshore Humane Society presentation by Lynn Arrester, a genealogy presentation by Jeremy Linden, a Reiki presentation with secretaries Gale VerHague and Pam Fabritius, and a nature walk led by Professor Emeritus John Malcom.

The facility, a gift of the Star Family, was formally appraised in late 2013 as having a value of $1.65 million. University officials hope it will greatly enhance Fredonia's appeal for potential Start-Up NY entrepreneurs.
